The lords of the Golden Horn; from Suleiman the Magnificent to Kamal Ataturk
Published in Unknown Binding by Macmillan ()
Author: Noel Barber
Average review score:

Excellent overview
The Ottoman Empire was a tremendous influence on many of the things we take for granted in the Western World, bringing with it strange concepts such as hygiene and an appreciation of the finer things in life.

This book gives a well written and entertaining overview of the rulers of this massive empire, from its earliest days to its eventual demise. Along the way we meet many of its rulers and marvel at their cruelty and compassion, great leadership and debauchery. Its a great story, one never dreamt of in fiction, and one well worth reading.

expresses the reality of fate and strength of love together
I thought this book was astounding! In it, a mother expressed from her perspective what it was like to have a premature baby. Through the eyes of the family, the reader feels everything they go through and learns to cope with the heartache and triumphs presented. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest at seeing life from different perspectives. Not only does the novel offer insight into the technology available to premature infants who stay in the NICU, it makes the reader aware of the social dilema faced by today's neonatologists. Who should live and who should die? In whole, this book brings together the reality of fate and the strength of love

An enlightning tale...
This book is a very adventurous story of a young boy who travels during the Gold Rush Era. Though, he's not headed west (as of yet), he still finds lots of adventure.

My son and I enjoyed reading this book together as part of our Westard Expansion study. Although it is fiction, the author puts in a lot of information you can expand upon.

It is easy to read and dive into. Makes a great read aloud or a good book for an older elementary child.

My son can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Magicians of the Golden Dawn: A Documentary History of a Magical Order, 1887-1923
Published in Paperback by Red Wheel/Weiser (June, 1978)
Author: Ellic Howe
Average review score:

A fantastic read, an eye-opener about the modern occult
....While affording the subject all the dignity it's due, Howe's thorough treatment of the Golden Dawn's history reveals a trulyh ilarious tale of deception, cross-deception, power struggles and self-delusion which is part of modern occult history. It is fascinating to watch the fabrications of the Order take on a life of their own, until even the protests of the myth's creators cannot stop the process....This is a lesson to all would-be Rosicrucians, about how easy it is to fall prey to our need to believe in things that are both powerful, and tantalizingly forbidden. This is an example of the drama that sweeps the susceptible into mind-bending fits of fanaticism.....Hopefully we can learn from the example of the G.D.. It serves to illustrate the importance of restraining our desire to believe when it threatens the pursuit of authentic information....Even if every other aspect of the book is ignored, Howe's thorough tracing of the G.D.'s known documents and mythos provides a guide for tracing many hoaxes and commonly traded "occult" beliefs back to their sources, as well as identifying those real legends upon which they based their fabrications. Definitely a must-read for anyone considering Masonic or other occult pursuits.

Manhattan Gateway: New York's Pennsylvania Station (Golden Years of Railroading Series)
Published in Hardcover by Kalmbach Publishing Company (July, 1996)
Authors: William D. Middleton and George H. Drury
Average review score:

If you like great Achitecture and outstanding engineering..
Middleton has spoiled us with quality books, and "Manhattan Gateway" is no exception.

This book contains a well-balanced selection of how and why this beautiful structure came to life, as well as the incredible engineering that made Penn Station possible.

I am not a New Yorker or an American at all.. I live in Rome, Italy and the similarities with the baths of Diocletian and Caracalla is daunting.

Middleton focuses on technical as well as architectural details and I strongly recommend this book to whoever is interested in either subject.

Also noteworthy are the captions of how the Hell's Gate Bridge was constructed and how the "new" Pennsylvania Station will look like, returning this New York terminal to some of the architectural magnificence intended by the great architects Mc Kim, Meade and White (designers of the original station).

If you like New York, especially for what was lost menially in this great city.. you will love this book.
